The sample ballot in their report had party names with a check box next to them and the unrankable names of the slate listed in small print below.

The most ridiculous part - common in almost all PR systems - was that there were to be no by-elections for vacancies in regional seats. If a regional MLA resigned 3.5 years after an election, he or she would be automatically replaced by the next person from the party's list in the last election. And, better yet, if no one was available from the list, the party could call a nominating meeting and their nominee would automatically become MLA.nbpoliticohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09517401409653124082noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30694877.post-69780146916874928772009-02-20T10:45:00.000-04:002009-02-20T10:45:00.000-04:00My problem with regional seats vs. constituency se...My problem with regional seats vs. constituency seats is that a MLA representing "Central" will be seen as having more stature than one representing "Fredericton-Fort Nashwaak". If I have a problem w/ a school or road in my area, who do I call, the local MLA, or the regional MLA?

I also wonder how the regional seat candidates would be chosen. Would a party list be generated, or would people be able to rank the candidates from an overall list. While I may vote "Liberal" in my riding, I may not to assign my vote to the entire Liberal regional list.

I used to be a PR supporter, but the more I think about it, I like the simplicity of a constituency being represented by a single MLA.
You know who you're voting for, and the MLAs are responsible to a constituency.

Our current system does provide odd results from time to time. However, it does prevent a candidate or party who was rejected by 90% of the electorate from gaining a seat in the legislature. I'd venture a guess that CoR and the Parti Acadien would still hold 2-5 seats in our legislature given a PR system.Independenthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12613179250500913032noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30694877.post-55179541252171076312009-02-19T20:36:00.000-04:002009-02-19T20:36:00.000-04:00I'm not sure that that is the case.
